The Aston Martin DB9: a Sports Car Lover's Dream
The Aston Martin DB9 is a sports car
made in the GT style that entered the market in 2004.
The DB9 is a replacement for the DB7, the previous model, which had been in production since 1994.
Overview
The DB9 began production in 2004 and it is available as a coupe and as a Volante convertible. Both of these
variants come equipped with a 6.0 litre 12 cylinder engine.
The fact that the engine is 12 cylinders explains the reason Aston Martin chose not to call this model the DB8:
they believed it might cause confusion and people might think the car was an eight-cylinder model.
Another report indicates that the company believed the DB9 was more advanced than the Jaguar XJ-S, the model that
was the inspiration for the DB7.
Aston Martin chose the Gaydon facility in England because the facility has the resources necessary to produce
5,000 units annually, the approximate production volume of other sports cars including the Ferrari F430 as well as the Porsche 911
Turbo.
However, the DB9 is not usually compared to those sports cars but rather ones such as the Jaguar SKR, Bentley Continental GT, BMW M6 and AMG. In spite of its promise that Aston
Martin will produce more DB9 models than previous models, it is unlikely the company will increase its sales
percentages as a maker of higher end sports cars.
The DB9 operates on 469 horsepower running at 6000 rpm with a torque of 600 Nm.
It can go from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds and has a maximum speed of 306 km/h (190 mph).
DB9 Volante
The Aston Martin DB9 for sale represents the DB9 in a convertible
version. This variant was constructed by hand but only a limited number is available. A 6.0 litre 12-cylinder
engine provides the power just like in the coupe's body style.
It can achieve a maximum speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) and accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.9 second, only three seconds
more than the DB9 coupe.
Customers can choose from a 6 speed manual transmission or a 6 speed Touchtronic 2 automatic.
DB9 LM
Aston Martin released a special variant of the DB9 in commemoration of the victory they achieved in the 2007 24
Hours of LeMans. This special variant was called the DB9 LM and they produced only 124, all in the coupe body
style. The colour is unique and called Sarthe Silver, also a tribute to the race: the Circuit de la Sarthe where it
takes place.
Redesigning the DB9
Aston Martin made the decision to make some major changes to the design of the DB9 in 2008. This facelift
included an engine with much more power, a newly design for the interior and a few minor re-designing to the
exterior of the car.
Aston Martin also made serious changes to the front grille of the car, completely re-designing the mirrors so they
now look a great deal like the DBS supercar.
Customers also have several wheel designs from which they can choose as well as having the option to choose clear
taillights.
The company also enhanced the engine in the DB9 so that it has an additional 20 horsepower and 600 Nm of
torque.
They also made modifications to the gearbox in vehicles with the Touchtronic automatic transmissions that will
allow drivers to make quicker and much smoother gear changes. They accomplished this by installing a control box
that operates using hydraulics, a step that is supposed to make it much easier to park the car. The company also
installed a new suspension in order to improve the quality of the ride and improve handling.
Another modification to the model included a redesigning the centre console—it is now exactly like the one in the
DBS supercar. The company also installed thicker glass in order to further decrease the amount of noise within the
interior of the car.
Plans are in the making for some additional modifications during 2011 though these will be minor and include things
such as changes to the front of the car itself, front and rear exterior lights, sills of the doors and some changes
to the wheels.
The major change customers will see in 2011 is that the Adaptive Damping System will no longer be optional
equipment but will be standard on all subsequent models.
All of these changes indicate the interest Aston Martin takes in assuring the safety and high performance of every
vehicle including the DB9.
As technology makes major changes throughout the world, Aston Martin endeavours to stay one step ahead of everyone
else.
