Sometimes success is all about timing and sometimes, success happens in spite of the timing. The Aston Martin debut
falls into the latter category. Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford set up a car dealership, Bamford & Martin in
1912 on Callow Street in London.
Martin was heavily into sport racing at Aston Hill and bolstered by the success of their car business, they came
up with a stellar plan to build their own automobiles. In 1913, they began work on the first Aston Martin named for
Lionel and his favourite racing area. The debut car was cobbled together from a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex
engine and a chassis from a 1908 Isotta-Fraschini.
The first Aston Martin, of a long line of Aston Martins for sale, was ready to roll out of their factory at
Henniker Place, Kensington in March 1915 – a very bad time to start producing a new car. The boys chose to serve
their country in World War I. They joined the service and sold their equipment to the Sopwith Aviation Company.
Once the war was over, Martin and Bamford re-established their company in Kensington. Even though Bamford left
the business in 1920, the name remained and the business was saved by Count Louis Zborowski’s funding. The 1922
Aston Martins set world records at the French Grand Prix and at Brooklands.
These spectacular vehicles were constructed for racing and named the Green Pea, the Razor Blade and the Halford
Special. In spite of the successful performance of these cars, Bamford & Martin went bankrupt in 1924. Lady
Charnwood bought the business and put her son John Benson in charge. Sadly the business foundered in 1925 and in
1926, the factory closed and Lionel Martin gave up finally.
Aston Martin Revived
A pair of entrepreneurial automobile engineers, Bill Renwick and Augustus (Bert) Bertelli and several investors
grabbed the failed business and latched onto the name of the record-breaking cars as the new company name and
persona. Thus Aston Martin Motors was born. (One of the investors was the persistent Lady Charnwood.)
Renwick and Bertelli already knew the business and had previously produced a car known as the Buzzbox. It was
their only creation and while they were thinking about promoting the Buzzbox, the Aston Martin car with its healthy
reputation came available.
They hopped on the Aston Martin brand and made the business theirs. In 1926 and 1927, with Bertelli as Aston
Martin’s technical director and designer, the Aston Martin line of Bertelli cars were produced – the T-type,
International, Le Mans, MKII, and the Ulster (all 1½ litre models) and the 2-litre 15/98 and Speed Model.
During the last half of the 1920s, Aston cars shone. However, as the depression settled upon the world, the
company hit a financial glitch again. By 1932, it was up for financial grabs and it was rescued twice before 1936.
Rather than continue with racing cars, the new approach under new leadership was road cars. Of course, World War II
put a stop to automobile production and the factory turned to producing aircraft parts.
Chaos in the Company
After the war, the company went through a number of changes. Sir David Brown’s company (David Brown Limited)
acquired Aston Martin and another company, Lagonda in 1947. Lagonda’s claim to fame was the 2.6 litre engine
designed by W. O. Bentley. With Brown’s money and acquired expertise, the composite comprised of the company and
Lagonda (Aston Martin Lagonda) began producing wonderful classic recognisable by their Aston Martin DB
designation.
The DB4 raised the standard of excellence in 1958 and the 1963 DB5 became the most famous of them all. It
starred in James Bond movies. 007’s specially equipped Aston Martin became the symbol of glamour and power that
persisted for decades. This was not the only one of the Aston Martins in film. Tippi Hedren drove one in The Birds.
Michael Caine drove one in The Italian Job.
Nevertheless, the car company changed hands several more times but in spite of the changes, it continued to turn
out special automobiles for sport and road use. An Aston Martin V8 Vantage car for sale, new or pre-owned, is a
real treasure. If you want to browse around the classic realm of this rugged line of cars, check out the offers for
a coupe car for sale or a volante car for sale.
The Aston Martin Vanquish is another find among the Aston Martin dealers with used cars for sale.
While black leather interiors, alloy wheels, electric windows, cruise control, and climate control air conditioning
are standard features, you can find recent additions such as satellite navigation as well. Each iteration of the
Aston Martin automobile production has its own special offering. The Le Mans series is a prime example. Aston
Martin cars maintain a reputation exemplified by its Formula One world championship winners. Second hand or new,
these cars carry an unusual history.
Still Appealing
The Aston DB9 debuted in 2003 and is still being produced.
There is the DB9 coupe and the Volante convertible
version. (It stars in the television series, Desperate Housewives.) It is worth mentioning because it is the best
selling Aston ever produced and one of the most popular current models. Check out its features and you can see some
of the reasons for the enduring fascination with the Aston Martin.
Here is a thumbnail sketch of what the DB9 has to offer: alloy quad overhead camshaft, 6L V12 engine, six-speed
transmission (either automatic or manual), two doors and four seats, extruded aluminum chassis, Bilstein dampers,
19 inch wheels, stability control, traction control, and tire pressure monitoring.
If you are serious about speed and quality and the exhilarating experience of driving a classic car that has
survived nearly a century and won awards while doing so, then look around for a used Aston for sale.
