Some History of Bentley Cars

For more than 90 years, Bentley has been a name that conjures visions of grandeur, wealth, privilege, and
most of all glorious speed and perfect engineering.
The grand concept began in the brain of Walter Owen Bentley (W. O. Bentley), a man gifted with extraordinary engineering abilities.

In 1912, he and his brother, H. M. began selling French DFP automobiles. W.O. modified the cars by streamlining the pistons, thus making the cars faster. He furthered improved the design with a better camshaft. The brothers won races with this vehicle that could do a flying mile at 89.7 mph. This was in 1913 and the car was a 2-litre model. The Bentley boys were on their way to becoming a legend. During the war, W.O. continued his tinkering improving the French Clerget rotary engine for the Technical Board of the Royal Naval Air Service.

After the war, W.O. formed Bentley Motors Ltd. in Cricklewood near London and the first Bentley, the EXP1, was constructed in the United Kingdom. It featured a single camshaft, with the shaft in front of the crankshaft. It had four valves per cylinder and measured 80 by 149 mm. The capacity was almost 3 litres (2996 cc), close enough to dub it the 3-litre model. The measurement was a variation from the usual horsepower designation because it made the vehicle sound even more powerful.

There are many reasons why the new Bentley EXP1 was so different, including the lack of a crankshaft.
Without the standard crank to get the car running, the EXP1 did not seem up to snuff. It took a lot more tweaking before the EXP2 – a 2 door saloon – was delivered in September 1921. It sold for £1150, £400 higher than the quoted 1919 price but it was worth it.

Wealthy British motorists were captivated by the new Bentley from day one. Celebrities such as Beatrice Lillie and Prince George bought the Bentley and there was a long waiting list. The cars lived up to the original announcement and those who went onto the two year waiting list, were more than satisfied. It would take a book to tell the story of the improvements made to the many examples of new Bentley for sale over the ensuing 9 decades. The important factor is that the underlying factor was always about quality.

Showing that W.O. knew the importance of quality, one of his first moves was to commission Mulliner to do the bodywork for the new Bentley EXP1. This is part of the brilliance that led to the adoration of the Bentley. Mulliner had been the sine qua non of construction since the 1500s when they made saddles. In 1760, Mulliner was charged with building carriages for the Royal Mail. Mulliner is still with the company’s Mulliner Bentley subsidiary.

Quality does not come cheap. The company had been undercapitalized from day one and the Great Depression did not help matters. Even with the success of Bentley cars in 1928, namely the Speed Six which won twice at Le Mans, Bentley Motors Ltd slid toward receivership.

In a bidding war to acquire the disabled company, the British Equitable Trust Ltd. won the deal. However the Trust was acting on behalf of Rolls Royce and the sale to Rolls Royce solved the financial problem and kept the Bentley name and production functioning. Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd was formed as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rolls Royce. W.O. was retained as an employee but that did not please him and he left in 1935. The first new Bentley for sale to roll out of the Rolls Royce factory in Derby, England, was the silent sports car or the Derby Bentley

The new Bentley for sale became more Rolls Royce like over the next few years and after World War II, post-war standard steel saloons were the state of the art. The production had moved to Crewe into a factory that had been a wartime engine factory.

One of these Bentley cars for sale, the Mark VI Bentley was announced with a 6 cylinder engine similar to the one in the Rolls-Royce Mark V Wraith and then the exclusive Bentley body appeared on the 1949 Rolls Royce Silver Dawn. By the mid fifties, the Rolls and the Bentley were virtually indistinguishable in terms of construction.

However, a Bentley is a Bentley and there is nothing to equal this exquisite icon of the automobile industry.
Part of the reason is that the luxuriously and expensively built vehicle’s history involves a sophisticated circle of aficionados from the world of celebrities.
Seeing a Bentley convertible driven by a star athlete sums up its magical glamour.

The Mulsanne was produced from 1980 until 1992. Mulsanne refers to the Mulsanne Straight which is part of the Le Mans race course which harks back to the company's early history with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Mulsanne reappeared in 2010 and the Bentley Azure is a derivative of that which has endured since 1995.

This snappy 4-seater convertible appeared on the market in 1995. It was a big beast of a car, 5.334 m long,
and 2608.156 kg heavy powered by a 6.75 litre V8 and it could still go from 0-60 in just over 6 seconds. In 2006,
a more powerful Azure appeared. The engine could deliver 450 hp, up from the 1995 version’s 400 hp.
It could get from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. The Azure T is more powerful and includes modern technological features such as an iPod dock.

Any mention of Bentley cars has to include the Continental Flying Spur with its 12-cylinder engine. Based on the first Bentley Speed model from 1923, the new Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed is the fastest model ever to emerge from a Bentley factory (although it is more an artist's studio than a factory). The Flying Spur goes from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds and can reach speeds of 322km/h.

In a combination of German engineering and Bentley expectations of quality, a new and surprising union was formed in 1998 Volkswagen acquired the Bentley business. Even after all this time, W.O.’s branding remains.
He wanted "To build a good car, a fast car, the best in its class."

The availability of the famous and durable luxury car has been expanded through the option to buy a pre-owned Bentley. There is not one single piece of the automobile that is haphazard in design or installation. There are computer records kept of the entire manufacturing process. The construction is exceptional. For instance, the wheel of a Bentley is made entirely by hand. The interior leather is all from a single piece of material for consistency. These cars can be seen at sparkscars.com, specialist Bentley dealers UK showroom in London W3.
