BMW X6 for Mid-Size Luxury and Elegance
The BMW X6 was first released in the middle of 2008. This model is a mid-size model that was originally marketed
under the guise of a Sports Activity Coupe.
It possesses a combination of attributes from both an SUV and the luxury elegance of a coupe.
The original idea for this model first appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2007, but its official debut was at
the North American International Auto Show and the Montreal International Auto Show in 2008.
The X6 is a bit longer than its predecessor, the X5 and sets lower.
While it originally had seats for four, beginning in 2011 it has offered an option for five.
Types of Petrol Engines
When the BMW X6 went on sale in the United States and Canada, customers
could choose from two types of engines.
Both variants used dual turbocharged power supplies with the top model being a 4.4 litre 8-volt engine capable of
operating from 5,000 to 6,400 rpm with torque power of 6600 Nm.
Unlike any other engine of its type worldwide, the turbochargers are situated between the "V" regions in the centre
of both cylinder banks.
The exhaust as well as the intake manifolds are located in unconventional positions: the exhaust is positioned
above the engine, and the intake manifolds are situated in the direction of the outside sections of the "V."
The second engine model is a six cylinder that produces 302 horsepower and operates between 5800 and 6250 rpm—the
car has a maximum torque of 400 Nm.
Diesel Engines
There are two diesel engines for the X6 both of which are expected to generate up to 90 percent of the sales within
the European sector of the market.
Both engines are 3.0 litre turbodiesel engines and are named respectively as such: XDrive30d and XDrive 35d.
The latter provided the basis for BMW's release of a diesel-powered engine in the United States in 2008.
BMW X6 M
The BMW X6 M and the BMW X5 M are BMW's first attempts at an XDrive all wheel vehicle from within its class (M
GmbH).
The vehicle made its first appearance at the New York Auto Show in 2009. Other features on this model include a
automatic transmission (6-speed M Sports) with aluminum paddles in a pull style located on the car's steering
wheel, M Dynamic Mode feature, lower Adaptive Drive suspension, and much more.
All of these enhanced features make the vehicle one of BMW's best mid-size models.
The X6 M has the ability to go from zero to 97 km/h (60 mph) in 4.5 seconds
X6 Global Hybrid
In the latter part of 2009 a new and completely different model appeared on the market. For the first time BMW
produced a car with their own version of the hybrid power train which they called the two-mode hybrid system.
The name BMW gave to this model was the ActiveHybrid X6, and it quickly gained acclaim as the most power hybrid
motor vehicle anywhere in the world. It first appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2009 and began selling in the
United States in December of that year. The car will not be sold in the European market.
The Active Hybrid X6 operates on an 8 cylinder 407 horsepower unit combined with two electrical engines.
The maximum power output is 485 horsepower at 780 Nm torque power. Drivers have three different options for
operating this vehicle: use of sole electrical power, using power from the combustion engine or for short drives
combining the two different drives.
If you choose to avoid CO2 by driving the vehicle only in the electrical mode, you can expect a peak speed of 60
km/h (37 mph). While this is certainly not a speed designed for reaching distances quickly, it is great for
inner-city driving where you are likely to encounter the most exhaust fumes and probably can't travel much faster
than the maximum speed anyway.
On the downside, the vehicle itself is quite heavy and the auxiliary petrol power unit places strict limitations on
how well you can reduce the car's fuel consumption.
Before the introduction of the X6 BMW had never used the Dynamic Performance Control system.
The DPC combines with the xDrive all-wheel drive in order to provide the highest performance in a vehicle of this
class and help maintain proper traction especially when it comes to over-correcting and under-steering, two serious
errors that can lead to loss of control and serious crashes. Unlike ordinary drivetrains the DPC system speeds up
the wheel that is moving faster in order slow the vehicle and thus increase the traction.
