 Acquiring a Merc

The very name Mercedes-Benz denotes quality and power but the fact is that while any Benz model is desirable, some are just more classic than others. One example is the 1928 SSK that could reach speeds of more than 120 miles per hour. At the time, it was the fastest car in the world and the ideal sports car of its time.

However, you might be more interested in buying a classic from a more modern time or even a new model that will become a classic in its time. This is a matter of personal choice. Sometimes people fall in love with a certain model and want no other. Some prefer diesel, some prefer a van. It's all about what meets your wishes, wants, and needs.

In a sad story about a man and his 1971 Mercedes 3.5 Cabriolet, the man took his car to the local specialty shop for routine maintenance and that night, while the car was up on the hoist waiting for an oil change, the shop caught fire and the car was destroyed. His son, eager to please his father, arranged to buy a brand new Mercedes for his distraught father.

Rather than be pleased, the father was furious – he did not like the new model or the colour or anything about it. The reality was, given more time, he might have accepted it more graciously but he wanted his silver metallic Cabriolet and did not rest until he replaced it with an identical model.

A Little Bit Of Mercedes History

Mercedes-Benz cars as we know them today have been produced by a German car manufacturer since 1926.
Of course the company also manufactures trucks, buses, and coaches.
Mercedes-Benz is a division of Daimler AG and even though the first car under that name did not appear until 1926, the principles had been producing vehicles since 1886 when Karl Benz built his Benz Patent Motorwagen.
Daimler's first Mercedes appeared in 1901.

A little history of how these two giants came together to create one of the world’s greatest cars provides insight into why the Merc is so popular.
In 1886, while Karl Benz was building his petrol-powered Motorwagen, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were working on adding a petrol engine to a stagecoach. Great minds thinking alike began the journey to their eventual liaison as the Daimler-Benz company.

Like Rolls, Royce, and Porsche, these two entrepreneurs, Benz and Daimler, began with self-named companies.
A primary difference was that their ultimate vehicles were called Mercedes-Benz rather than Daimler-Benz.
This stems from Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft’s 1901 Mercedes automobile.
Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft Mannheim was formed in November 1890 in Germany.
Seven years before in October 1883, Benz & Cie. was formed in the same city.

So, Where Did “Mercedes” originate?

Emil Jellinek was a businessman from Austria who had an extreme interest in sports. He saw the future of the automobile and wanted to be part of this important new world.
His beloved daughter, Mercédès, was born in 1889. When she was eight years old, Emil visited the Daimler factory in Cannstatt and placed an order for a Daimler car. It had a six-hp two-cylinder engine.

That was 1897 and the Daimler’s peak speed was a breath-taking (for then) 24 km/h. However, this was frustratingly slow for Jellinek. He ordered two more cars and insisted on at least 40 km/h as the basic speed expectation. The two Daimler Phoenix cars he received in September 1898 had front–mounted eight-hp engines
and were the first cars ever to be produced with four-cylinder engines.

More than mollified with the Daimler Phoenix, Emil Jellinek began selling Daimler cars and because of the high society contacts in finance and the aristocracy, business boomed. In 1899, he took 10 Daimlers and in 1900, 29.
Emil was racing at the emerging race meetings – under the pseudonym Mercédès.
Fans of the race world referred to the man and his team of cars by his driving name. Racing cars was an extremely popular sport at the turn of that century.

Emil ordered cars by the dozen. When he firmed up an agreement regarding his sales relationship with Daimler in 1900, it was a mutual decision to use Mercedes as part of the car’s name. A new engine, known as the Daimler-Mercedes was designed. The first of the new speedier cars was the original Mercedes.

Wilhelm Maybach was the engineer behind the design and the Mercedes was a miracle with a pressed-steel frame and high-performance engine. It was more than a motorised stage coach and has the distinction of being the first automobile of the modern age.

At the racing event known as Nice Week the Mercedes took all the honours. It was 1901 and orders began to pour in at such a rate that the Cannstatt Daimler plant was running at full capacity.
In 1902, Mercedes was registered as the trade name.

Twenty-four years later when Benz and Daimler merged, the line was called Mercedes-Benz.

Choices

If you are looking for a pre-owned Mercedes Benz for sale, there are many cars available through local dealers as well as online. You might want just the name such as you would find in the multi-purpose Mercedes Benz Viano or a classic used car with features including an emission control system, seat comfort package, a tyre-change toolkit, the capability of opening/closing with infrared remote, and integrated rear child seats. Or perhaps you simply want a reliable and durable second hand car.

Any used cars for sale with leather seats and walnut trim, or even walnut-effect trim parts, and a capacious console with stowage or stone guard are well worth a second look. If that car is a used Mercedes Benz sedan or coupe, you have easy access to the Mercedes Benz UK world of luxury. Actually any body type would more than suffice.
A word of warning, if you do test drive one of these models, you run the risk of falling in love with the fabulous Mercedes.
They are the epitome of efficiency.
