2004 Mercedes Benz SL 55 AMG Pace Car
The 2004 Mercedes Benz Pace Car is a marvel of engineering: the manufacturers wanted to make a Mercedes Benz SL
free of the performance limitations present at the other models. The maximum speed is no longer limited
electronically, and a number of modifications are meant to bring you closer to the racing experience: bigger
brakes, lowered suspension and a modified front bumper to allow air flow to the additional oil cooler being a few
of them.
Visually, this Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG has small differentiators from
the standard SL 55, the most evident being the three-slat grille (since previous models featured four-slat
versions).
Being a pace car (also known as a safety car), the beauty under discussion is designed for the track; it
is used to lead the race cars around debris and other obstructions, or limit their speed. The mechanical
specifications are similar to the standard SL 55.
The 510 horsepower, 5.5 litre, 24-valve V8 engine makes it one of the most powerful production cars on the
market. The suspension system, based on the second generation Active Body Control (ABC) coupled with a steady and
secure steering system and the AMG high-performance breaks, sporting composite brake discs with six-piston
aluminium fixed callipers, as well as the multiple-disc limited-slip differential, make this car fit for both the
track and the street.
The performance of this Mercedes Benz is enhanced compared to the standard SL 55: the 0 to 60 mph acceleration
is achieved in just 4.3 seconds, with the help of the five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift feature,
and there is no speed governor to limit the top speed at 155 miles per hour.
No matter how powerful and fast this car is, there have been no sacrifices in terms of comfort: the Parktronic
system, EFM, CD changer, TV set, pan roof, keyless go and comfort seats remind you the fact that you’re in a
luxurious German supercar. Mercedes Benz left no matter unattended, be it of a mechanical nature or otherwise.
Who might be the perfect owner of this car? Perhaps the puritans out there who don't want to compromise when it
comes to performance. Many might find speed governors a bit too restrictive – and jewels like this Mercedes Benz
might be exactly what they are looking for.
