New Range Rover 2012 - The Evoque
The new Range Rover 2012 Evoque is a departure from the more traditional Range Rover look. It replaces the LR2 and
it comes in a two door and a four door version.
It is also available in three basic versions, or packages, if you prefer: Pure - purity of the LRX concept,
Prestige - the most luxurious of the models, and Dynamic - the sportiest of the Evoque range. Each version has its
own trim level and degree of sophistication, colour schemes and minor design differences.
However, underneath it's still the same basic car, and different roof colours to contrast with the body, hard wood
trim instead of metal, or a 20-inch alloy wheel instead of a 19-inch one, won't really change the way it drives and
handles. It's still a clear winner however you package the new Range Rover 2012 Evoque.
At a glance, first impressions of the Range Rover
Evoque
Although this car replaces the LR2, it is a less boxy design. The departure from the more traditionally accepted
Range Rover look is welcomed. This car has real style and elegance. It sits lower, and although the car is about
the same size as its predecessor, it looks more compact and manageable.
This isn't just a good modern design though, it has a futuristic look about it; you have the feeling you are
getting
a peek at what is yet to come, in a way. The Evoque doesn't have that, SUV must go off the road, kind of look. This
is a car for the city that will happily go out to the country too, or even straight through the country, for
that matter.
The Range Rover Evoque has a more rounded appearance than the Range Rover models that have come before it.
It feels smaller too, and more able to zip through narrow streets with confidence.
This is a city car that offers a high degree of comfort. And yet, Land Rover have managed to keep costs down by
borrowing bits from here and there. This is most obvious inside the car where parts from Jaguar, Volvo and Land
Rover can be spotted by those who know what to look for.
This makes perfect sense though. It isn't as if these parts are in any way inferior. Far from it, they complement
the Evoque perfectly to the point where they seem to have been designed with only the Evoque in mind.
At a glance, the bits that make the Range Rover 2012 Evoque get
animated
This new Range Rover Evoque is powered by a 2.2 litre turbocharged inline 4 cylinder diesel engine that is
transverse-mounted. This delivers 237 horsepower and 234 lb-ft of torque. In urban conditions it delivers a very
acceptable 47.1 mpg, and in motorway and open country conditions it will give you 62.8 mpg.
That works out at a combined total of 56.5 mpg. It isn't the fastest car on the road, though its top speed of 112
mph is more than enough. It will take you from 0-62 mph in 11.2 seconds. It's environmentally friendly too with CO2
emissions of just 133 grams per kilometre.
The 2.2 litre diesel engine is available for all three packages of Pure, Prestige and Dynamic. There is also a
petrol engine available for the Dynamic. This is a 2.0 litre Si4 engine using direct injection technology.
The fuel consumption is not as good as the diesel engine, but acceptable at 23.7 mpg in urban conditions, 40.9 mpg
in motorway and open country conditions, with a combined total of 32.5 mpg. it can reach 0-62 mph in 7.6 seconds
and top out at 135 mph. Its CO2 emissions are 199 grams per kilometre.
Transmission on the Dynamic model is with a 6-speed automatic that features Drive Select. The gear stick rises up
out of the central console when the engine is activated, and lowers itself again when the engine is switched
off.
Paddle shift controls are incorporated into the steering wheel to allow a more manual gear shifting experience. The
diesel models of the Range Rover Evoque have a manual 6-speed gearbox with an intelligent Stop/Start function is
fitted as standard.
The 6-speed automatic is an optional extra.
At a glance, inside the Range Rover Evoque
One feature that most people will like about the Land Rover Evoque is its advanced Voice Control. You can't control
everything - yet - but you can control some things.
This car has an excellent 8-inch display positioned centrally that has a touch-screen for controlling many of the
car's features, including the entertainment equipment.
There is also a 5-inch information display on the dashboard.
The heated front seats of this car will be appreciated by everyone in the colder northern climates, especially in
winter. The rear seats can be split in the usual 60/40 arrangement to help with transporting difficult long
items.
The interior lighting is anything but simple. You can have shades of red, blue or ice white. It's completely
customisable for your own particular taste. Needless to say, the comfort level inside the Range Rover Evoque
is sheer luxury.
At a glance, how the Range Rover Evoque handles on the road
The car has 19 inch alloy wheels with a variety of different spoke arrangements available. This is not, strictly
speaking, a passenger car. However, it can be one of you want it to be.
The Evoque, in a way, bridges the gap between an off-road car and a town and city car. This new Range Rover feels
like a car more than it feels like an off-road SUV, to be honest, and it's all the better for it too.
The Range Rover Evoque handles well in rough conditions, and it handles great in city conditions. This is a very
versatile car.
At a glance, conclusions
This is certainly a car that makes heads turn. It isn't immediately recognisable as a Range Rover, and many people
seem surprised when they read the name across the wide bonnet. The design is almost unexpected, but welcomed at the
same time. At a starting price of £27,995 (in late 2011), it's more affordable than many cars claiming to be at the
same level.
This new Range Rover, the Evoque, has a versatility that will carry it far.
