Some Rolls Royce History
There have been about 60 Rolls-Royces in the company’s lengthy history. The first one was introduced in 1904. At
that time and until 1939, the production line only turned out the chassis while specialty companies provided the
coachwork. After World War II, Rolls Royce chose to build the entire car.
The first such construction involved the standard steel saloon and to carry out this task, the production factory
was moved from Derby to Crewe in 1946. The Crewe factory was a decommissioned aero engines wartime factory. Closely
tied to the Bentley car company, the new Rolls Royce factory’s first production was the Bentley Mk VI.
Rolls Meets Royce
The great brand began when the Hon Charles Stewart Rolls and Sir Frederick Henry Royce met on May 4, 1904 to
discuss the car industry. It was early days for automobiles and Royce had already begun building them.
Rolls was selling foreign cars. He wanted to sell the best possible cars in the world. At the same time, he wanted
to sell automobiles made in England. There just weren’t any that met his standards. He considered setting up a
factory but feeling that he lacked the experience, he began to look for an existing company that met his stringent
requirements. That is what motivated him to meet Royce. The two men joined forces and the rest is history.
The Rolls Royce Silver Ghost
The Silver Ghost (1907 – 1925) was considered, at least by Henry Royce, to be the "best car in the world." It was
an impressive car and among its feats was the long distance test of endurance. The car covered 23,210 km without
incident, doubling the previous record.
In 1913, four Silver Ghost cars were entered in the Austrian Alpine Trials and took every award. During the Great
War, 40/50 HP motor cars were commissioned as ambulances, staff cars and armoured cars.
The Ghost was the automobile that set the standard for the company and started the reputation that endures, more
than a century later. The design is pure Rolls and relies on the artistry of proportions. The ratio of wheel height
to body height is a perfect 2:1. The wheelbase and bonnet are both long. You can see the new Rolls Royce Gost for sale here in our showroom.
The elegance of the classic design appeals even in silhouette and this is a common thread that runs throughout the
line. Because the proportions are sketched out before the variations in the design are created, each new style
carries a resonance of the previous styles.
The original Ghost set the standard for all subsequent models of Rolls Royce for sale.
Speaking of the Ghost, when you hear about the Silver Ghost, you could be
hearing about the car model or the single car known as the Silver Ghost. The Silver Ghost was the popular name
attached to the 40/50 hp. When Chassis no. 60551 which was registered as AX 201 rolled off the production line, it
was called the Silver Ghost by the press. That was in 1906 but it was not until 1925 when the Phantom was produced that the company officially designated the 40/50 as the Silver
Ghost.
The Silver Ghost single car is Chassis no. 60551. The Silver Ghost line refers to the touring cars that followed
this design and that has the distinction of being one of the longest-running single models ever known. The other
contenders for this distinction are the Model T Ford, the Volkswagen Beetle and the British Mini.
The Silver Ghost is also considered to be the most famous luxury car ever designed.
There are plans underway to produce the stretch, coupé and convertible version of the Ghost.
The Phantom
For 17 years, the 40/50 or Ghost, was the only available Rolls Royce for sale. The
Rolls Royce Phantom of 1925 added new features such as a pushrod driven overhead valve and a straight 6 engine.
This model was referred to as the Phantom I and was built until 1931. The Phantom II was produced from 1929 to 1936
and added the 4-speed manual transmission and servo-assisted brakes all around as well as semi-elliptical spring
suspension to the front. The Phantom II Sedanca de Ville (1934) is a prime example of this incredible car.
The Phantom III was produced between 1936 and 1939. Not many Phantoms were produced during this period – fewer than
6,000 in total for all three versions. The Phantom IV began production in 1950 and continued for 6 years. This was
an enchanted vehicle and only 18 were constructed. Designed for royalty and heads of state, the first of this model
went to Princess Elizabeth.
The Phantom V was also elite but there were slightly more produced than the IV – 516. The most
famous of this line was John Lennon’s white Phantom V that he had repainted in psychedelic colours. There
were 374 VI models (1968-1991) and then in 2003, the VII appeared. Technically this is not a Phantom, having been
produced as a Rolls-Royce under BMW ownership.
Another ethereal Rolls-Royce for sale is the Wraith that was constructed in 1938 and 1939.
Only the chassis was produced and then turned over to independent coachbuilders. After the war, from 1946 to 1959,
the Silver Wraith was produced which was based on the earlier Wraith but bigger and more powerful. By 1954, the
engine capacity was up to 4887 cc.
Elegance
The bottom line is that the Rolls-Royce is, well, the Rolls-Royce of all automobiles. They are fit
for royalty and exist in a league all of their own. From the Ghost to the Phantom to the Wraith, the Cloud,
the Silver Spur, the Silver Seraph, and the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow the progression has
been a steady stream of luxury cars without parallel.
The Silver Shadow (1965 to 1976) and the Silver Shadow II (1977 to 1980) has the largest production
volume of all the models. There is also the Rolls Royce Corniche convertible and other fabulous models such as the
Silver Wraith touring limousine and the Rolls Royce Ghost saloon. We have an example of a 2010 used Rolls Royce Phantom saloon for sale in our showroom.
The attention to detail is thorough with typical perquisites such as the hide trimmed steering wheel, hide interior
upholstery. Leather lined and well maintained with a good service history, your Rolls Royce seems to stay in
perfect condition. Finding these as used cars for sale is not as easy as it might seem because they can last for
generations. An old Rolls is a sign of status whether you bought it pre-owned from a
specialty dealer or your grandfather bought it new.
